This page is about the disassembling of a 1971 Chrysler Valiant VH series produced in Australia. The car is in a bad shape, looks like it was stored outside for many years. The only option we had, is to take it apart until the last bold, have it sandblasted to locate all bad parts of the chassis.
After sandblasting we started to cut out the rotten parts and replaced them with new. Most parts we had to make by hand and welded in.
It is most important to protect the steel from oxidation. So after sand blasting we spray the car with a special anti-rust base paint, after that even more different coatings.
Because we need a rolling chassis, we restored all axles, suspension and other important parts. Most inconvenient when you have a dead weight to work with. Not only for us, but for other disciplines as well, like the sand blaster and the paint shop to start with.
A good resto job, is about planning. Where to start, what comes next? Some items have to be done before the car can have a paint job. Not only the rolling part, but things like the windows, doors or the seats. Have them 100% restored and placed in position. Doing those kind of repairs after the car is painted, you will shoot yourself in the foot.
It seems that classic car lovers also have a desire for owning classic stuff and now and then they ask me to restore them. If I can fix it, I usually do it. Getting replacement parts is often difficult. It comes to repair and rebuild, copy parts etc.
I have done many things, bicycles, fridges, gas pumps, motor cycles, you name it. Most things from the ’50, most valuable too. Some of my restorations end up in private museums. No kidding!
Before I start with telling my story, please understand I have no pictures from that time I worked with those cars. Therefore I am most grateful to Wikipedia to be able to use their pictures and information.
In those days I used to work at the Volvo and I have seen them all 🙂 In that time I already was the ‘classic specialist’ and there was no Volvo I could not fix. Beneath you will see a few of the cars I have been working on and most of them I have seen in Thailand as well.
The Volvo 140 Series is a line of mid-size cars manufactured and marketed by Volvo from 1966 to 1974 in two- and four-door sedan (models 142 and 144 respectively) as well as five door station wagon (model 145) body styles—with numerous intermediate facelifts. More than a million Volvo 140s were built.
The Volvo 164 is a 4-door, 6-cylinder luxury sedan unveiled by Volvo at the Paris Motor Show early in October 1968 and first sold as a 1969 model. 46,008 164s were built before the car was superseded by the 264 in 1975. The 164 was Volvo’s first venture into the luxury segment since the end of PV 60 production in 1950, and was the first six-cylinder Volvo since the PV800 last produced in 1958.
The Volvo PV is a series of two-door, four-passenger car models — the PV444 and the PV544 — made by Volvo from 1947 to 1966. During World War II’s early stages, Volvo decided that a new, smaller car that could deliver good fuel economy would assure the company’s future. A raw materials shortage during the war drove home the point that an automobile should be smaller, and also complicated Volvo’s ability to mass-produce the product. In 1944, when the car was finally introduced to a car-hungry public, response was very positive and orders poured in from the Swedish population. It was another three years though, until 1947, before series production began.
The Volvo P1800 is a 2+2, front-engine, rear-drive sports car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars between 1961-1973. Originally a coupe (1961–1971), it was altered into a shooting-brake for the duration of its production (1972-1973). Styling was by Pelle Petterson under the tutelage of Pietro Frua when Frua’s studio was a subsidiary of the prestigious ‘Italian carrozzeria Ghia’, and mechanicals derived from Volvo’s dependable Amazon/122 series.
Marketed as a stylish touring car rather than a sports car, the P1800 became widely known when driven by future James Bond actor Roger Moore in the hit television series The Saint which aired from 1962-1969.
In 1998, an 1800s was certified as the highest mileage private vehicle driven by the original owner in non-commercial service — having exceeded three million miles (over 4.8 million km) as of 2013.
Reasons like styling, quality and safety makes Volvo cars an excellent choice for being your next classic car. Volvo was always a head with developing new ideas for cars and still today.
If I can remember a car I’ve serviced, then it is the 1975 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman. I’ve serviced it for many years and even did an engine overhaul, the 6.3 liter V8 was special designed for this car. In that time the most luxury car (and expensive) was ever built. This car had luxury features like air-ride and hydraulic operated windows and a fridge was a standard built in. It was the presidential car and therefore many were used by most important people.
Between 1963 and 1981 they built total 2,677 units, comprising 2,190 Saloons, 304 Pullmans (4 door), 124 6-door Pullmans (long wheel base) and 59 Landaulets (convertible).
If you can get your hands on one of them, understand that the parts to restore this car are incredibly expensive. Today the most of them end up in private collections or a museum.
Jay Leno has one in his private collection and he even modified it a bit, but if you ask me, it should be 100% stock.
Not often, but once in a while, customers visit us with a weird car problem. How those occurred might be the unsolved answer. This week we had a customer with a beautiful Jaguar and having electric problems.
BMW with a little shaking in the steering wheel at 110km/h. That was a hidden problem as well. So we had many others during the past years. Lately I received this picture in my email. This woman had major problems with her new carbon plate clutch to operate it. We solved her problem by adapting the clutch mechanism.
Recently a customer had fitted a new set of tires, because the tires started to be a little noisy and new ones should solve that problem too. The tire shop did an excellent job, however the noise was still there.
After test driving the car, I decided to take some apart for closer examination. Found out that both front wheel bearings worn out. The customer was amazed, because 6 months ago they were swapped for new. I showed and explained the customer that change those bearings and assemble it all, is a delicate matter.
